Driving down to start the Railtrail. For a good suggestion, READ ON !

Increasingly we have people driving to Central to start the Railtrail. A good TIP for those people is for you to drive to Middlemarch and leave your car with us for either secure inside or outside storage. Catch our bus that day to Clyde where you stay the night and then start the trail the next morning, cycling back to your car. This way you don't have to wait for the bus to take you back to Clyde. As most people will finish around lunch time, if they do 4 days on the trail, you will effectively be 5 hours earlier on the road home or to your next destination. Bookings on Railtrail under pressure for March and April

Please don't book airfares prior to getting your accommodation sorted on the trail. We are increasingly finding people are expecting that accommodation will be available and are booking airfares prior to booking accommodation. This not only leads to disapointment, but also loss of money on airfares. Please contact us for information on availability, we will only be to pleased to help.

Ride the Trail - Day 2

Omakau to Wedderburn 45km

Todays highlight would  have to be the beautiful Poolburn gorge where you will ride through two tunnels and two viaducts before opening out into the magnificent Ida Valley (made famous by the paintings of Grahame Sydney. You will then cycle down through the vast open expanse of the Ida Valley farm lands past the Idaburn dam, one of New Zealands best outdoor winter curling sites. It's well worth stopping off to visit  the E. Hayes and Sons Historic Engineering Works, about one km before Oturehua. Whilst in Oturehua make sure that you visit the famous historic local store before stopping for one of the amazing lunches at the local hotel.

After lunch you'll cycle past the Golden Progress mine just north of Oturehua before tackling the gradual climb up to the highest point on the track (and the marker for the 45th parallel). From here there is a gentle downhill ride through to Wedderburn. Here you can stop for a drink at the Wedderburn pub (and later a meal) and spend the night at some of the local accommodation. The 4th generation Duncan family can take you on a farm tour or you could have a trip organised to the old Goldmining town of Naseby to try your hand at curling at  their new world class enclosed curling rink. (Naseby has many historic buildings, and a range of accommodation). All this can be arranged by Trail Journeys staff.
