New for the 2011 - 2012 season will be a combination Guided Wine and Railtrail experience taking in some of the best cool climate vineyards in New Zealand. For the wine experience, Appellation Central Wine Tours out of Queenstown will take you on a tour of some famous wineries in the Bannockburn area including lunch and then deliver you to Trail Journeys for the start of your Railtrail experience.

Increasingly we have people driving to Central to start the Railtrail. A good TIP for those people is for you to drive to Middlemarch and leave your car with us for either secure inside or outside storage. Catch our bus that day to Clyde where you stay the night and then start the trail the next morning, cycling back to your car. This way you don't have to wait for the bus to take you back to Clyde. As most people will finish around lunch time, if they do 4 days on the trail, you will effectively be 5 hours earlier on the road home or to your next destination. Trail Journeys new base in Middlemarch has been an outstanding success. With a combination of services offered including hot showers, internet access, merchandise, bike hire and car storage, the Middlemarch base fills the need for a top class facility. The 24 hour fuel from our newly installed card pumps has also provided the local community with a reliable fuel service for the area.
Hyde to Middlemarch 29km
Today is a shorter ride and downhill but this allows you plenty of time to have a great breakfast and still make the lunch time train. Look out for the Hyde railway station just around the corner from the Hyde community and a little later the Hyde train disaster site. If you're really lucky you may also see the famous "Taieri Pet", the fantastic cloud shape that sometimes forms during strong North Westerlies (check out todays photo galleries). If you do see the Pet you'll be very pleased that you're cycling from Clyde to Middlemarch (with the prevailing winds BEHIND you !) .
Note that if you're doing the Taieri Gorge Train trip to Dunedin, in the summer season (1st October - 30th April) the train leaves at 1pm and arrives at Dunedin at 3.30pm on Friday and Sunday. On all the other days the train will leave from Pukerangi (about 20min bus ride from Middlemarch) at 4.45pm. We request that you be in Middlemarch by 3.45pm to catch our bus to meet the train at Pukerangi. (The late train also runs to Pukerangi on Friday and Sunday) There is an early train to Pukerangi each day, leaving Pukerangi at 11.30am to travel back to Dunedin, but this mainly caters for the Dunedin Tourist market and bus services to Pukerangi for this train are limited unless a larger group require special service. If you're being transported by Trail Journeys back to your start then have lunch at the local pub or one of the cafes before we pick you up to return you to Clyde (Typically we aim to have you back in Clyde by 4pm though this can change depending on how busy the trail is).
