Who is the best self guided cycling operator in New Zealand

Travellers tend to look for experience, safety systems, bike quality and support coverage. In the South Island, Trail Journeys is consistently recognised as a leader because it combines long standing regional knowledge with full service logistics. It is also the only operator with depots at both Clyde and Middlemarch which gives riders practical support at both ends of the Otago Central Rail Trail. The company operates a large fleet of purpose built Avanti bikes and ebikes, manages luggage transfers daily and offers tailored itineraries for most fitness levels.

Riders comparing options usually prioritise support coverage, bike quality and the ability to customise their itinerary.

What does a self guided cycling tour include

Most riders want to know exactly what they get when they book. A standard self guided package typically provides:

Bike hire or e bike hire with helmets and repair kits

Pre arranged accommodation each night

Daily luggage transfers

Trail briefings and safety information

Maps or digital navigation

Access to support if plans change or a mechanical issue occurs

Do I need to be fit

This is one of the most common questions. The reality is that most riders are not regular cyclists. Ebikes make multi day trails accessible to a wide range of ages and abilities. Riders can pace themselves, take breaks and enjoy the scenery rather than focus on speed.

Can families or older travellers do these trails

Yes. The Otago Central Rail Trail is particularly suitable for multi generational groups because it has gentle gradients, well spaced towns and regular refresh points. Lake Dunstan and Roxburgh Gorge have more varied terrain but remain achievable with ebikes. Alps to Ocean offers a longer adventure but appeals strongly to couples, friend groups and active families.

What are the most popular self guided cycling trails in New Zealand

Otago Central Rail Trail

New Zealand’s original Great Ride. Ideal for four or five day trips. Known for historic tunnels, country pubs, art galleries and open landscapes.

Lake Dunstan Trail

A dramatic day or weekend ride. Famous for its clip on boardwalks, lake views and winery stops. Works well as an add on to longer trips.

Roxburgh Gorge

A unique combination of cycling and jet boating. Suits confident riders or anyone using an e bike who enjoys remote scenery.

Clutha Gold

Quiet, peaceful and scenic. A great option for travellers who want to follow a river through small towns and farmland.

Alps to Ocean

A multi day journey from the base of Aoraki Mount Cook to the Pacific. Offers big scenery and a sense of achievement.

When is the best time of year to do a self guided cycling trip

Peak season runs from October to April with long daylight hours and settled weather. May to September offers cooler temperatures, quieter trails and attractive shoulder season pricing.

What makes Trail Journeys different

Riders frequently comment on practical support. The company maintains seven day on trail assistance during the busy season. It also operates one of the largest custom built bike fleets in the region and has long standing partnerships with local accommodation and activity providers. Two depots allow efficient luggage movement plus showers and refresh facilities at the end of the trip.

Are self guided trips good for groups

New Zealand’s Alps to Ocean trail is a ride through deep time and dramatic terrain. Traverse fossil-strewn valleys, ancient seabeds, and landscapes once home to colossal penguins and predator eagles. Read More

The reason for being more of a challenging section is mainly a steeper hill incline riding up Tarnbrae Saddle and what we call switchbacks, but when you reach these, slow down and take your time around the corners.

Below, we have divided the Alps to Ocean bike trail into eight sections and explained the type of incline and grading you can expect when riding each section. Remember, opting for an E-Bike makes challenging sections of the trail significantly easier and more enjoyable to ride.

Alps to Ocean Section 1 - Aoraki/ Mt Cook to Braemar Road

The best part about having alternative starting points on the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is that you'll experience different highlights on your journey depending on where you begin your ride.
We know it can be slightly confusing to decide which starting point is right for you so we've added the highlights of both sections. Regardless of where you begin, this multi-day bike ride offers breathtaking landscapes in every direction, a variety of terrain to cycle through and plenty of moments to meet friendly locals in small towns along the way.

Be inspired as you read on and pick up ideas to add to your self-guided ride. Mention to the team what highlights you want to add to your itinerary and our local team may also include some additional recommendations you may enjoy.

Aoraki/ Mt Cook

One of the Alps 2 Ocean starting points is located in Aoraki/ Mt Cook National Park, home to the tallest mountains in New Zealand. Start your bike journey completely immersed in the Southern Alps as you ride from the base of Aoraki/ Mt Cook to the end of Lake Pukaki where you will meet up with the alternative route.

Located in the central-west of the South Island, the Southern Alps has 19 peaks and over 3000 meters long. If you decide on this starting point, you will ride approximately 315km of the entire Alps 2 Ocean. This may seem a little daunting to some riders so we also offer a shorter itinerary where you can finish your ride in Otematata, otherwise, you can always customise your itinerary with us when you speak to our sales team.

With Trail Journeys, you have the option to add the Hermitage Alpine Lodge to your ride. You'll stay the night beneath Aoraki/ Mt Cook, have the option to walk up to Tasman Glacier viewpoint and wake to the view of New Zealand's highest peak right outside your bedroom window. It's truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Heli-ride transfer over the Tasman River

As you're riding through the Southern Alps, you'll reach the edge of the Tasman River and one of the best ways across the river is to jump on a helicopter transfer. It's the ultimate Alps 2 Ocean experience for you and your bikes to jump on a short heli-ride to the other side where you'll then continue the rest of the bike trail.

The heli-ride is included in all our Alps 2 Ocean itineraries starting at Aoraki/ Mt Cook.

Stargazing at Lake Tekapo

The Alternative Alps 2 Ocean starting point is located in Lake Tekapo. This region is part of New Zealand's only International Dark Sky Reserve, known to be the world's best place for stargazing. With the clearest skies within the Southern Hemisphere, stargazing tours are a great opportunity to spot comets, constellations, nebulas and faraway galaxies.

Be sure to tell our team you're looking to add this to your itinerary. It truly is an experience not to be missed.

Ride along Lake Pukaki

Enjoy a scenic ride alongside Lake Pukaki with a backdrop of Aoraki/ Mt Cook. Make sure to stop and take plenty of breaks to take in the scenery as it is a truly spectacular sight on a clear sunny day - the bright turquoise water can be seen in all its glory. The unusual colour of the lake is due to remnants of the Tasman Glacier located upstream and will leave you in awe.

Lake Ohau

Riding along the cycling trail around Lake Ohau creates a moment of tranquility on your self-guided trip. Experience the magnitude of Ben Ohau Mountain Range with its deep blue waters and mountain views, as you cycle through scattered native scrub around the southern edge of the lake and into town.

Tarnbrae Saddle

Challenge yourself with Tarnbrae Saddle because the views are absolutely worth it. This rewarding section of the bike trail involves a 900m climb to the top and down the other side. Although it is a relatively steady incline, Tarnbrae Saddle includes narrow sections, and switchbacks and may be exposed to the elements, depending on the weather you're riding in. Make sure to add layers of clothing to your pack during this part of the cycle trail. You can learn how to layer cycling gear to ensure that you're prepared for all the elements.

Cliff Clays Omarama

Take a break from riding and explore an otherworldly phenomenon found right here in New Zealand. The towering Clay Cliffs located in Omarama will transport you to Mars with its incredibly unique rock formations and landforms. Although there is an small entrance fee, you can spend as long as you want, exploring the crevices and climbing to vantages point with views of the valley below.

Hot tubs Omarama

After riding the more difficult section of the bike trail, the Hot tubs of Omarama are the perfect excuse to unwind and relax. In one of the most beautiful locations, the steaming hot tubs are filled with high-country glacial water and warmed to your liking.

Add this to your itinerary and we'll book it in advance for you.

Sailors Cutting

As you're pedalling towards the Benmore Dam, the largest earth dam in New Zealand, Sailors Cutting is your second challenge on the trail. This section of the Alps 2 Ocean trail incorporates a narrow bike path and switchbacks around mountain edges. Ride at a relaxed pace to take in the panoramic views completely.

The trail opens up to views of Waitaki Valley with Benmore Dam below. It's a moment where you'll truly appreciate the man-made structure and all the men who built it.

Wine Tasting and Vineyards

Make sure to take a pit stop at one of the vineyards in Waitaki Valley. Kurow is known for its vineyards, making it the perfect place to indulge in wine tasting and charcuterie boards before exploring the rest of the town.

Let our team know that you are looking to add a wine tasting to your itinerary and we'll book a vineyard in advance so you can just jump off your bike and enjoy yourselves without the hassle of planning ahead.

Elephant Rocks

As you cycle toward the end of the Alps 2 Ocean trail, take a break from riding and step into another world at Elephant Rocks. Known as yet another incredible, natural wonder of New Zealand, these massive limestone formations, resembling a herd of elephants, create a fascinating and surreal landscape. This quirky spot is a favourite for photographers and a fun stop to stretch your legs before jumping back on the bike for the last stretch.

Oamaru

Your Alps 2 Ocean cycling adventure concludes in Oamaru, a historic town known for its impressive Victorian architecture and vibrant arts scene. Make sure to capture a photo at the official finish line and celebrate completing one of New Zealand's most iconic rides.

"We booked to do the Otago Central Rail Trail using Trail Journeys on the recommendation of a friend. We weren't disappointed. The service was exemplary from beginning to end. We had to change our dates and they were very accommodating, despite it being high season. The transfers were very efficient, the bikes were great (big touring bikes with panniers and high handlebars) and the accommodation was superb (although we did book the 'luxury' itinerary)." - Kirsty C

Where is the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail

Located in the middle of the South Island of New Zealand, the Alps 2 Ocean bike trail is cut into 9 sections starting from the base of Aoraki/Mt Cook through to the small east coast town of Oamaru.

There is an alternative starting point, beginning at Lake Tekapo with a shorter cycling distance of 301km.

Both starting points can take between 5-8 days to complete the ride.

Starting points on the trail

Starting at Aoraki/Mt Cook

Starting at the base of Aoraki/ Mt Cook, the complete A2O cycle trail is a 315+ km ride. You'll have the chance to explore the National Park and walk up to Tasman Glacier view point before jumping on a heli-ride over the Tasman River.

From there, a scenic ride by Lake Pukaki will have you in awe. The bright turquoise blue colour comes from the Tasman Glacier upstream, found to be due to glacier remnants of silt particles and glacial flour in the water.

Starting at Tekapo (alternative starting point)

An alternative route of the Alps 2 Ocean is the 301km ride from Tekapo to Omarau. You'll follow the canals before descending to meet the rest of the trail at Lake Pukaki. A few highlights when cycling the A2O bike trail includes the Clay Cliffs in Omarama, riding around Sailor's Cutting from Omarama to Lake Benmore and along the canals to Lake Ohau.

The Alps to Ocean is an 'introductory to moderately' graded bike trail. The bike trail includes sections of gravel (45%), sealed road (30%), gravel road (18%) and rougher terrain such as shingles (6%).

The bike trail includes narrow sections and switchbacks when heading over Tarnbrae Saddle and from Sailor's Cutting to Benmore Dam.

To prepare for this multi-day bike ride, we suggest 90 minutes of cycle training incorporated into your training regime 3-5 times a week for an enjoyable ride.
What clothing and equipment should you take on your cycling tour? It may seem like a mundane subject to think about, when all you want to do is hop on your bike and go. Yet, it is absolutely essential that you get the gear right!

The bottom line is that you have booked a cycling trip because you enjoy cycling. You want to soak up the New Zealand culture and Central Otago scenery at a relaxed pace from the comfortable saddle of your bike. These tips will help you prepare for your trip so that you'll have the best time and not be worrying about your fingers falling off.

1. Ensure you have quality wet weather gear

Invest in good quality wet weather gear - including a rain jacket and pack cover. You won't regret it. It protects against the elements, with windproof and water-resistant properties to shield you from unexpected rain as well as wind chill or snow.

On a social ride, which for all intents and purposes the vast majority of organised cycle trips are, there is nothing worse than riding in the rain without adequate protection - especially if it is cold rain!
- Garry Corbett

2. Replicate your comfortable set-up

Whilst it's not a requirement on our cycling trips that you bring your own gear, if you already have a comfortable set-up at home, it's a good idea to replicate it on your trip. This could include your saddle, clip-ins for SPD's and ergonomic handlebar grips. At our Trail Journeys HQ, we have a variety of bikes to choose from, including comfort bikes, mountain bikes and electric bikes. It's recommended to choose the setup that feels most comfortable to you.

When you hire one of our bikes, you will be given a helmet, repair kit and rear carry bag. Most bike seats can be adjusted to our bikes in the country and our travel experts are also always on-hand to advise on recommended gear.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"> </carouselsource>

3. Consider wearing a bike jersey

Bike jerseys with a number of pockets on the back are another good addition to your wardrobe for both comfort and convenience. Don't worry, not all of them look like a brightly coloured billboard.

The pockets can conveniently hold everything from snacks to cameras and money. It is important to note here that if you shop around you can purchase cycle jerseys that do not make you look like a Tour de France contender.

4. Cycling gloves make a big difference

Cycling gloves are another addition to your wardrobe that are highly recommended when bike riding. While gloves may seem like a small consideration, they serve a number of very important functions including grip and sun protection.

First and foremost, gloves keep the hot sun off the back of your hands, but on a more practical level they stop blisters, chafing and other discomfort caused by the constant friction of handlebars and road vibration against the skin of your hands - especially when they are damp with sweat.

The extra grip provided by gloves could mean the difference between staying on your seat or taking a tumble and landing on the ground. The improved grip enables better control of your bike because your hands are less likely to slip on the handlebars each time you turn.
- Garry Corbett

5. Comfort is key

While it's important to focus on fitness, one shouldn't forget about comfort. If you're feeling uncomfortable it will make it hard to enjoy your trip.

All your contact points must be really comfortable including your hands, backside and feet. If you are not used to long periods of riding we recommend buying a gel seat pad or padded cycling pants.

Sitting on a bike seat for multiple hours can present some challenges if you haven't done so for a long time, or at all. Some people like to bring padded bike pants, others gel seats, and while they all help to some degree nothing aids your buttocks better than getting it used to being on a bike seat gradually before your trip. Just like you wear your boots in to avoid blisters before a trip, wear your bum in by sitting on the bike before you travel.
- Brad Atwal

6. Wear synthetic clothing - not cotton

Carefully consider the clothing you pack before you begin your trip and consider investing in some quick-drying clothes. Clothing made of cotton does not dry quickly and can hold too much moisture.

It is best to bring along fast-drying clothing that are predominantly synthetic or of a synthetic blend. Cotton holds onto moisture and can be a cyclist's worst enemy. Not only does it look unsightly to be wearing a T-shirt and shorts soaked with sweat, but the moisture magnifies both heat and cold and can make things very uncomfortable.
Here's everything you need to know about bike training and riding gear to best prepare you for your cycling tour - with added insider tips from our bike experts.

After months of dreaming and weeks of researching your cycling trail, you've booked your trip. Now all you have to do is sit back and wait for the day when you can finally head off on your long-awaited adventure... if only life could be that simple!

As with most things in life, you get out what you put in. So, you'll need to do some physical conditioning to prepare. It's also important to consider the appropriate clothing and gear to take on your trip. Adequate preparation will make your riding experience even more enjoyable.

To help you prepare, we've consulted our in-house cycling experts and bike addicts to compile the best tips and tricks on training and gear essentials you'll need to ensure you are comfortable and confident on your biking adventure.

Our top 10 most helpful training tips

1. Consider the difficulty of the trail

It's very important to be mindful of the trail grading and difficulty so that you know what type of cycling you'll face on your trip. There are several factors to consider when preparing, which will help make your tour more enjoyable. Do you have one big day of hill climbing? Will the weather be quite hot at the time of year you are riding?

Understanding your trip itinerary and grade will help shape your training sessions and give you guidelines on how much training you should do leading up to your trip.

If you are new to cycling and are feeling unsure, don't be put off! It's normal to feel a little nervous. Just remember, it's not a race. Go at a pace you are comfortable with so you can soak up your surroundings along the way.

Furthermore, many of our trips have vehicle support, so if you aren't feeling up to riding one day there is always the option to have a rest. There's also the option to choose an eBike for that extra pedalling boost.

2. Get miles on your legs

It may sound obvious, but the key to getting 'cycling fit' is spending as much time on your bike as possible. Don't make the mistake of thinking that running or swimming will suffice.

While it is good to mix up your workouts with cardio and weight-bearing exercises, it is essential that you fit some riding time into your weekly workouts. Cycling regularly will activate different muscle groups, as well as get you used to sitting in your seat (or 'saddle') for long periods.

- Garry Corbett (journalist and avid cyclist)

I jog a few times a week and this was the preparation I thought was enough for my cycle trip. But once on the bike, and facing 700-metre road ascents, I realised there is a big difference between running fit and cycling fit. Now, I always recommend people actually cycle in preparation for their cycle trip - a few times a week and not just on the bike in the gym (although, that is better than not cycling at all).

- Kate Baker

3. Train consistently

Try to keep up a consistent amount of exercise each week, especially during the weeks leading up to your trip. Consistency and repetition are important for getting cycling fit.

To keep up consistent workouts, it's a good idea to schedule them at the same time every week and fit them into your daily schedule. Also, remove as many barriers as possible, so you can't come up with excuses not to train. For example, organise your gym clothes the night before, set reminders on your phone and keep a workout calendar.

4. Practice climbing hills

Let's face it, not many people love riding up hills but the more you ride up them, the more you'll be prepared for them on your trip.

Basically the trick is to choose the "right" gear that allows you to pedal at your optimum speed. Choose a gear that is too low and you will spin the pedals too fast with the result that you will tire quickly or conversely choose a gear that is too high and you will have to expend too much energy with each turn of the pedals, with the result that you will tire quickly or potentially cause injury to your knees or hips.

- Garry Corbett

5. Be flexible with your training

We all lead busy lives and it can be hard to fit specific training sessions into your everyday life. To fit in more time on your bike, try adding cycling to your daily routine, for example riding to the shops or work. This can also help build consistency.

The main thing I did to train was to get out on my bike as much as possible. I'd try and incorporate cycling into my every day life. Do I need to take the car to the shops? Maybe I could just pop to the shops on my bike if I only needed a couple of things. Making sure I had time in the 'saddle' (to prep butt and legs) was a key part of my preparation. Seeking out a few hills and stairs also helped me increase my leg strength.

- Kate Harper

6. Push yourself

The more you prepare, the more you'll enjoy yourself. If you are only 'just' fit enough you won't get as much out of your trip.

To put it bluntly if you want to get the most out of your long-awaited cycle tour you will need to do some sort of physical conditioning. This fact applies whether you have booked a so-called "easy" tour with few or no hills or if you have booked a tour that tackles some of the most arduous mountain climbs in the world.

- Garry Corbett

7. Train in a variety of weather conditions

Some of your training should reflect the trip conditions. If it might rain on your trip, then train in the rain and test your wet weather gear. See how rain impacts your riding style.

8. Get familiar with handling a bike

If you haven't done lots of bike riding previously, make sure you are very comfortable with bike handling and functions. This includes changing gears, breaking and adjusting the bike.

On my first cycling trip along the Loire Valley in France one lady had never previously ridden a bicycle with gears. I chivalrously volunteered to spend the first half of the first day riding alongside her either changing the gears for her or supervising her own very ordinary attempts at what is, after all, a very basic task. The reality of the situation was that she should have been prepared for this basic task before she left home.

- Garry Corbett

9. Ride on different surfaces

The Trail Journeys staff will give you an idea of the types of surfaces you will ride on during your trip. Will you be riding on dirt tracks, paved roads or rocky paths? Practice training on these surfaces so you are comfortable handling your bike in similar situations.

10. Mix up your workouts

If you are including a few trails or adding extra activities onto your trip which might include cycling, curling or exploring Central Otago by foot, make sure you mix up your training sessions.

6 ways to recover from a multi-day bike ride

Most people spend a lot of time training in the lead-up to their cycling holiday to ensure they can complete and enjoy their Central Otago bike ride. With the extra activity added to your routine, you're bound to feel some level of ache, pain or strain from your training session - or after completing a day pedalling on the trail.

Try these helpful recovery tips to help ease any muscle or joint soreness post-exercise and keep your legs strong.

Cooling down

Going from an intense or high activity level back down to zero should not be an abrupt change for your body, the last thing you should do when you finish exercising is to stop completely.

If you hop off your bike, give your legs time to adjust to the change in the environment by pacing around on foot for a while.
When you are 5-10 minutes from ending your workout or activity, reduce your pace to a lower intensity to transition your body from activity to a resting state.

When beginning any exercise, you would warm up to activate your muscles, so similarly, allowing your body a cooling down period is also important to reduce the risk of cramping, as well as removing lactic acid from your muscles. This is especially important in cooler temperatures when muscle stiffness is much more pronounced.

Don't forget to stretch

After exercising, do gentle stretches for five minutes to allow your muscles to relax into a resting state; stretching restores your muscles to their normal length, aiding in their recovery.

Focus on the muscles used during the day while riding your bike, such as calves, hamstrings, hip flexors and quadriceps.

Avoid bouncing in and out of the stretch. Instead, you want to move into the stretch until you feel a mild to moderate tension, and hold the stretch for up to 30 seconds.

Fuel yourself

Long walks and extensive pedalling deplete your energy stores, so it's important to refuel to replace this energy, repair tissues and supercharge your recovery process.

Take advantage of the 30-45 minute post-exercise window where your body maximises the absorption of protein, water and carbohydrates, and aim to have a nutritious snack while after your training session or in between your long walk or cycle. Include some high-quality protein and complex carbohydrates such as granola, energy bars or nuts. Your body will thank you for it later.

Rehydrate and replace fluids

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! You lose a lot of fluid during a long day of riding, so you should be replacing fluid throughout the day.

Drinking 1 ½ cups to 2 ½ cups of water per hour for at least 2 hours after exercise is an easy way to boost your recovery as the water supports every metabolic function and nutrient transfer in your body.

Just remember to reduce your water intake as you get closer to bedtime to limit the number of times you have to get up in the middle of the night.

Rest

If you're training to the lead up to your cycling journey, give your body the chance to rest in between the days you are active. This will give the muscles you've been working on time to recover and avoid the risk of injury and strain from prolonged or intense exercises.

This may not necessarily mean doing no activity at all, but rather switching to less intense activities or exercises which focus on other areas of your body. For instance, if you did cardio one day, the following day you may want to do weight training instead. If you are riding all day and want to ease the pressure on your joints, you could opt for a short walk the next day.

Mental and physical rest is equally important when letting your body recover, so getting enough sleep will allow you to come back refreshed and feel even stronger the next day.

Preparation

While out on the trails warming up and stretching your muscles before you start can do wonders as it prepares your body for the day ahead.

By following these steps, you will be able to minimise the impact on your body so you can truly enjoy your bike ride with a quicker recovery time.

Our team really appreciates receiving beautifully written reviews from our travellers. So it was no surprise that we were delighted to read about Tara's recent biking holiday in New Zealand. Read on and follow Tara's journey as she experiences the iconic Otago Rail Trail for the first time. She had the chance to try out one of our new e-bikes on her self-guided cycling experience allowing Tara and her cycling partner to take breaks and soak up the scenery along the way.

Over to you, Tara.

In pursuit of an active, purposeful holiday teeming with both planned itineraries and an essence of spontaneity, I found myself drawn to the Otago bike trail, about an hour's drive from Queenstown. What began as the transformation of a rail trail into a dedicated bike route turned into a captivating expedition, blending adventure with exploration in the mesmerizing landscapes of New Zealand.

The allure of cycling through breathtaking countryside without the worry of encountering cars made this journey truly unique. The trail unveiled a tapestry of experiences, each stop presenting a different facet of scenic marvels and historical remnants.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"> </carouselsource>

The journey commenced in Clyde, a picturesque town that set the stage for the adventure ahead. From the cozy accommodations to the welcoming pub and cafes, Clyde encapsulated the essence of the escapade that awaited.

However, the true gem of this expedition revealed itself at Hayes Engineering. This hidden treasure, steeped in history and frozen in time, with its impeccably preserved workshop and historic house, transported me to an era long past, a testament to the region's rich heritage.

As the trail unfolded, it presented a collage of varied scenery and a myriad of delights for the senses. Quaint bridges, remnants of railway life, distant snow-capped peaks, pastoral farms with grazing cattle and playful spring lambs, and charming villages all contributed to the picturesque postcard views along the route. The symphony of babbling rivers, birdsong, wild thyme, and vibrant yellow flowers added an enchanting touch to the surroundings.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"> </carouselsource>

The culinary delights along the trail were a delightful surprise. From the delectable treats at Alexandra Cafe to the standout pies at Waipiata and the home-cooked wonders at Hyde School, each stop offered a wonderful chance to refuel ready for the next leg of the trip.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"> </carouselsource>

One of the most satisfying aspects was cycling into Wedderburn, feeling a sense of accomplishment after conquering the highest point of the trail for the day. The cozy cottage accommodation offered respite, followed by a short stroll to the local pub for a warm welcome from the amiable locals.

Cycling the trail with an e-bike offered flexibility in tackling the varying terrain. While not physically demanding, the changing weather added an extra layer of intrigue. Proper clothing and equipment were crucial, transforming potential challenges into mere moments in the journey.

A surprising revelation was the time commitment required for each leg of the trail. Covering the distance to reach lunch spots or picturesque locations took a substantial part of the day. Yet, this unhurried pace allowed for complete immersion in the stunning vistas and seamless navigation thanks to excellent trail signage.

For future adventurers, I recommend allowing ample time to relish the journey, averaging around 37km per day. Take breaks to capture the stunning views through your lens and consider padded seat covers or specialized biking gear for comfort during extended hours on the saddle.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"> </carouselsource>

The journey's culmination brought the realization of the distance from Middlemarch to Clyde, suggesting that a night's stay in Clyde at the end might be preferable for some, rather than making the three-hour drive to Queenstown.

Trail Journeys orchestrated this adventure seamlessly, ensuring our needs were met and enhancing the experience with insightful briefings, notable highlights along the route, and impeccable accommodations awaiting us each night.

In conclusion, the Central Otago bike trail journey was undeniably a bucket list experience, seamlessly blending adventure, exploration, and the sheer joy of discovering the hidden gems tucked away in New Zealand's mesmerizing landscapes.

We are a group of 14 who initially went to Queenstown to celebrate some of our 50th birthdays. While there we decided to book a small bike trip through Trail Journeys to bike the Bannockburn Inlet trail. We were initially apprehensive as many of us hadn't ridden a bike in such a long time, hence us choosing a smaller trail to have a go on!

Well, we were all hooked after that trail - so we decided then and there to come back and book the Otago Rail Trail as we had all heard so many great things about it!

We absolutely loved biking as a group. Was so nice to share the beautiful countryside with friends as we biked.

Highlights along the Otago Rail Trail

The scenery was beautiful, there were no dull moments at all. We absolutely loved the views from the top of the trail by the 'Rail Trail post'.

The tunnels and Viaducts were true standouts for us too, as when biking you can take in all the views as well as take the time to appreciate the workmanship and all the hard labour to build these amazing structure back in the day.

Particularly, the Oturehua to Poolburn section, cycling through the tunnels and gorge, as well as biking over the Poolburn Viaduct in Ida Valley.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"> </carouselsource>

It was lovely to be on the Rail Trail and see where the train travelled - some of the passes would have been an incredibly tight squeeze for the train we thought! Also, if you get the opportunity to bike the extra side trail from the start of the trip in Clyde do it, as it was well worth it biking alongside the river to Alexandra.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"> </carouselsource>

Self-guided was such a great way to see it at our own pace and not from the road, it was great to be out there and amongst it all.

Towns and Accommodation

We really loved our stops in Chatto Creek and at Hayes Engineering. It was great to have places along the way to stop at for morning teas/lunches. Hayes Engineering was a great piece of local history too. The guys in our group especially enjoyed that stop!

Our most favourite stay was at Wedderburn Cottages. They were just perfect and comfortable, the scenery was stunning - especially the sunrise in the morning! We also had a great night at the local pub - Wedderburn Tavern.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"> </carouselsource>

We also enjoyed an outing to have a go at Curling - which was so much fun! Trail Journeys organised a van for us all to be picked up so we could go as it was a bit far on our bikes. We would highly recommend this to add onto your trip - we all learnt a new sport that we didn't really know much about at all.

Food and Drinks

Could not fault anywhere that we stayed. All food and wines were delicious. We especially loved staying at the Waipiata Hotel - could not fault their hospitality or their food.

Was it a challenging ride?

We were surprised by how much distance we actually biked over the 3 days! It was such a great sense of achievement! It wasn’t challenging at all.

The only 'tough' part was heading up the 'hill' (was more like a gradual incline) to the top where the 'Highest Point' marker is because we had a really strong head wind that day and were biking into it.

However having an E-bike saved us and we all made it up no problems at all. Each day was a good distance and not too tiring or hard on us at all.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"> </carouselsource>

Preparation

One of our group members is our group organiser and she dealt with John from Trail Journeys to make sure we were all booked and sorted. In terms of preparing for cycling some of us went out and bought our own bikes and started biking to practice! Some of the other group members go to the gym and have a good level of fitness, but they found the biking wasn't a challenge at all. We all felt we were really well prepared, nobody struggled (we are all in our 50's).

What is it like travelling with Trail Journeys?

Absolutely top notch service. We couldn't have asked for any better. John has been amazing to work with. He has now organised our group for our third trip coming up in January, we can't wait to get out on the trails again!

Advice for other travellers

Definitely do it! It's a great trip for all ages and stages of fitness. There was no time pressure - we had the day to take our time to get from one place to the next. If you are biking in the summer like us it was very hot, so we found wearing a long sleeved light cotton overshirt over our biking singlet was great to stop any sunburn.

Otago Rail Trail Highlights

Historic Landscapes: Cycling along the Otago Rail Trail offers a journey through Central Otago's rich history. The trail follows the path of an old railway line, passing through charming towns, and providing a unique perspective on the region's past. You'll encounter well-preserved historic sites, bridges, tunnels, and viaducts that tell the story of New Zealand's pioneering days. Make sure to grab a headlight as you pass through 3 railway tunnels, the longest tunnel being Poolburn Tunnel No.2 at 229 meters.

Charming Country Towns: Along the route, you'll have the opportunity to visit some of New Zealand's most unique and relaxed country towns. These towns offer a warm welcome to cyclists and provide excellent places to rest, dine, and learn about the local culture. From Middlemarch to Clyde, each town has its own character and attractions, making your journey as enjoyable off the bike as it is on it. There are many cafes and small businesses situated within the small towns to take a break and fuel up for the next section.

Poolburn Gorge: Many cyclists consider this section of the Otago Rail Trail to have some of the most dramatic landscapes. This is where 2 of the 3 Railway Tunnels are located. Make sure to bring snacks for a pitstop to soak up the incredible views in the valley. A tip for newcomers: cycling out of Poolburn Gorge Tunnel No. 2 on the Oturehua side, you'll be welcomed by the most spectacular views of the valley and mountain range in the distance.

Best time of the year to ride the Otago Rail Trail

Customise the perfect cycle trail experience for any season as the Otago Rail Trail is open all year round. The most popular time of year to visit Central Otago is between November and April but each season offers its own unique charm. Spring is a burst of vibrant colours as wildflowers bloom, and the weather starts to warm up. Cycling during this season is a refreshing experience, with mild temperatures and lamb season. Explore the trail under the clear blue skies and bask in the breathtaking Central Otago landscapes throughout Summer. As autumn approaches, the trail is full of golden tones, creating a picturesque backdrop for cyclists. We've had fellow cyclists who have appreciated cycling during New Zealand's Winter wonderland when the trails are quieter, the snow covers the mountains and you're cycling holiday is full of hot chocolates by the fire and late morning starts. No matter what season you are conquering this iconic bike trail, you should be prepared for any weather at any time of the year.

History of Central Otago

Take a step back in time as you travel through the Central Otago region. New Zealand's gold mining era started in the late 1800's and the Central Otago Rail Trail was to be built to transport supplies to and from the goldfields. Although, the gold rush era was over upon completion in 1907, so instead the railway line was used to transport, supplies, wood and livestock to and from Central Otago. As transport developed further into the future with cars and trucks transporting goods, by the 1980's the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Otago Central Rail Trail Trust redeveloped the section of the trail between Middlemarch and Clyde to what it is today. The bike trail officially became part of the Nga Haerenga, New Zealand Cycle Trail in March 2012.

Landscape and Wildlife

Riding along the trail, you'll have the chance to see a variety of native and exotic plants, as well as a variety of birdlife, insects, and wild and farmed animals, many of which are not seen in other parts of the country. Spring is the best time of the year for the lambing season and is a great opportunity for kids to spot newborns as they ride along the trails.

Rail Trail Accommodation

Unwind each night at a variety of economy, comfort and superior accommodations depending on your requirements and budgets. Central Otago has an array of lodges, BnBs, cottages and motels to choose from. Our team of local experts are always up-to-date with the availability each night and have local knowledge of accommodation styles and budgets to suit your needs.

No matter what type of rider you are, one thing, our self-guided cycling trips all have in common is 'experience for money'. From doing hot laps on a race track to sipping wine along the Lake Dunstan trail, make the most of New Zealand's landscapes and culture both on and off the bike.

Read on to find out about 5 of New Zealand's best South Island cycle trails to ride.

The Roxburgh Gorge Trail

At 21km, the Roxburgh Gorge trail makes its way from Alexandra to Lake Roxburgh Dam with an added 13km jet boat transfer to join each end of the trail on the Clutha Mata-au River.

The trail can be cycled all year round but it really comes to life during Spring with the hillside covered in purple, wild Thyme and a blanket of golden hues throughout Autumn, providing a striking contrast against the rocky landscape on Central Otago.

Length: 21km (1 day)
Difficulty: 90% easy, 10% intermediate
Start Point: Alexandra
End Point: Roxburgh Dam
Ideal for: Intermediate cyclists or experienced riders that enjoy striking landscapes and gold mining history.

Lake Dunstan Trail

As New Zealand's latest cycle trail, it's no surprise why the Lake Dunstan Trail is incredibly popular. An hour from Queenstown, the trail is beautifully engineered and follows the teal coloured waters of the Kawarau and mighty Clutha / Mata-au Rivers between Clyde and Cromwell.

Along the way, you'll encounter Cromwell's Heritage Precinct, Bannockburn's wine country and a coffee boat in the middle of the gorge. Information boards telling the story of the region's rich pioneering and Maori history are also scattered along the trail.

For a multi-day ride, combine this trail with the Roxburgh Gorge Trail, Clutha Gold and/or Otago Central Rail Trail for the perfect cycling holiday.

Length: 55km (1-2 days)
Difficulty: 38% Easy, 62% Intermediate
Start Point: Smith's Way or Cromwell
End Point: Clyde
Ideal for: Moderate-level bike riders looking for striking scenery, good coffee and wine. Cyclists need to be confident riding on narrow trails, and up switch-back hills.

Starting from the quaint settlement of Clyde, the trail features a number of tunnels, viaducts and bridges as it follows an old Railway line to Middlemarch.

The trailhead is a short drive from Queenstown and can be combined with the popular Lake Dunstan Trail or Roxburgh Gorge Trail.

There's so much to see and do on and near the trail, including spectacular railway bridges and tunnels, abandoned gold diggings, and historic architecture from art deco municipal buildings to rustic farm yards. There's also plenty of opportunity to taste Otago's celebrated local flavours in country cafes, wineries and more.
Researching where to go, what to do, places to eat, and working out how to get your luggage from point A to B.

This is where self-guided tours come in. They take the hassle out of researching and planning your holiday itinerary. Completely organised by the company, self-guided cycling trips still give you the freedom to cycle at your own pace without having a guide hanging around you all day.

Who is it for?

A self-guided cycling tour is perfect for families giving them the option to follow their own schedule and accommodate everyone.

It is also ideal for groups of friends that just want to enjoy each other's company. It takes away the hassle of planning and organising and allows the group to just show up at the start of the trip and cycle making the pre-departure process an enjoyable one

Additionally, it is also perfect for travellers that want to enjoy the scenery and make the most of New Zealand without the worry of planning.

Benefits of self-guided tours

So what are the benefits of self-guided cycling? Many come to mind, but here are the 5 most important.

Competitive pricing

Stress-free

Flexibility and freedom

Customisable

Sense of accomplishment

Competitive pricing

Self-guided cycling is an economical option when it comes to deciding how you want to travel around New Zealand. Without the bells and whistles that come with guided trips, our self-guided trips are extremely affordable. Of course, there are additional options such as accommodation upgrades and extra activities we can provide. If you are wanting to add to your trip, please reach out to our team of experts and we will assist you in creating your perfect itinerary.

Stress-Free

Our experts handle the pre-departure planning such as:

Bike supplements

Accommodation

Luggage transfers

Additional activites

Recommendations on where to eat

Map and itinerary

Flexibility and freedom

Now that you have a map, accommodation booked each night and luggage transfers, self-guided cycling gives your the freedom to cycle at your own pace. It gives you the flexibility to schedule your day around what interests you. Want to stop and admire the view for an hour? Or sit and have a coffee at a cafe? The choice is yours.

Customisable

With snow-capped mountains painting the backdrop and a chance to witness the mesmerizing southern lights (Aurora Australis), winter means the trails are quieter making it the perfect time for an adventurous holiday.

Preparing for the cooler months requires careful gear selection, as temperatures can drop below freezing, especially during the nights. To ensure you're fully equipped for your New Zealand winter cycling trip, we've curated the ultimate packing checklist.

Strategic Layering: The key to warmth

To stay warm and comfortable amidst New Zealand's unpredictable weather changes, proper layering is crucial. Embracing the flexibility of adding or removing layers based on the temperature fluctuations is only possible when you steer clear of single, bulky garments.

The Base Layer: Optimal comfort against the skin

Your base layer, the garment closest to your skin, should be made of breathable fabric that efficiently wicks away sweat as you warm up during your cycling sessions, while also providing insulation as your body cools down. Synthetic materials, wool, or synthetic-wool blends are commonly found in cycling base layers. For temperatures below 10°C, consider the excellent thermal properties of merino wool, or choose a cost-effective option like a standard polypro.

The Mid-Layer: Your insulating shield

Think of the mid-layer as your insulation layer, effectively retaining body heat when the temperature plummets. This layer should be easily removable to prevent overheating while cycling. During the depths of winter, a fleece or down jacket offers exceptional warmth. Alternatively, a lined cycling jacket can be an excellent choice for intermediate temperatures.

The Outer Layer: Guarding against the elements

Your outer layer serves as the ultimate defense against the elements, combining windproof and water-resistant properties without compromising maneuverability. A lightweight, breathable and waterproof cycling jacket is ideal, as it allows sweat to escape while shielding you from wind chill and unexpected rain.

Essential Accessories: Protecting your head, hands and toes

Don't let frozen hands and toes spoil your winter cycling experience. Often overlooked, your head, hands, and toes are the first to feel the cold. The thickness and insulating qualities of your accessories should be tailored to the season, your cold sensitivity, and the type of terrain in New Zealand.

The Ultimate Packing Checklist

Underwear and sports bras

Thermal wool socks

Thermals for optimal body insulation

Long sleeve shirts for added warmth

Warm pants to protect against chilly winds

Breathable waterproof jacket for reliable weather protection

Gloves to keep your hands comfortably snug

Scarf or buff for additional neck warmth

Beanie to protect your head from cold temperatures

Hand and toe warmers for extra comfort

Shoe covers for wet weather conditions

Sunglasses for eye protection against sun glare and wind

By adhering to this expertly curated packing checklist, you'll be fully prepared to embrace the enchanting beauty of New Zealand's winter wonderland while indulging in invigorating cycling adventures. Remember, dressing appropriately is the key to unlocking an unforgettable experience amidst nature's breathtaking backdrop.

<templatewrapper></templatewrapper>The 'Rail Trail' is one of the most well-known cycle trails in New Zealand and is high up on many Kiwi's bucket lists.

As New Zealand's original Great Ride, and the trail that inspired the Nga Haerenga Cycle Trail network, the 150km Otago Central Rail Trail follows a historic railway line from Clyde to Middlemarch. Its wide compacted gravel path has a gentle 1 to 50 gradient, and is vehicle-free, making it ideal for introductory cyclists and families.

The historic trail snakes its way through ever-changing dry, rocky landscapes with spectacular river gorges, tunnels and viaducts.

Along the way you'll discover thriving rural townships, preserved gold mining settlements, as well as numerous activities such as curling in Naseby, 4WD tours, a trip to St Bathans and much more.

Packed full of gold mining history, the 73km Clutha Gold Trail follows gentle riverside pathways along the Clutha Mata-au river from Lake Roxburgh Dam to Lawrence. This bike trail is a similar grade to the Otago Central Rail Trail, making it an introductory graded that is suited for a wide range of abilities and is the perfect addition to your Central Otago active cycling holiday.

Four small townships along the trail provide a welcome place to stop and take a lunch break, with each country town offering a unique story. Along the bike trail, you'll spot river banks dotted with the ruins of miner's huts, while lush farming valleys lead to the historic Roxburgh Branch Railway Line, including the 440m long Big Hill Tunnel.

The small town of Lawrence is worth exploring with 50 protected buildings, second-hand shops and a good pub. Riders can also explore Pinders Pond, Horseshoe Bend Bridge and the Lonely Graves at Millers Flat from Roxburgh onwards.

3. Roxburgh Gorge Trail

At 21km, the trail makes its way from Alexandra to to Lake Roxburgh Dam with an added 13km jet boat transfer on the Clutha Mata-au River in between.

The 45-minute boat transfer is a fantastic way to delve deeper into the gorge’s history. From the boat, you'll see the extensive sluicings at Doctors Point, the site of the 14 Mile electric-powered dredge and its generator plant, and many other historic sites. The jet boat can transfer your bikes too, which makes planning a lot easier.

The trail can be cycled all year round but it really comes to life during Spring and April with the hillsides covered in purple wild Thyme in Spring and the golden colours of Autumn providing a striking golden contrast against the rocky landscapes in Autumn.

The new trail on the block, the Lake Dunstan Trail weaves its way along the shores of Lake Dunstan from Smith’s Way to Cromwell’s Heritage Precinct. It then heads through Bannockburn’s wine country and into the remote Cromwell Gorge before finishing in the quaint township of Clyde.

Graded introductory to moderate, this breathtaking trail is the perfect length for a day ride, or you can take it slow over two days and spend time exploring Cromwell and local vineyards. For added comfort, we offer e-Bike options and baby seats.

A floating coffee boat located along the Cromwell Gorge section is a welcome fuelling station before the first big climb.

Popular with locals, this sheltered trail follows the true right of the Clutha Mata-au River, joining Clyde and Alexandra. Mainly single-track with some small undulations and boardwalks, it’s a great alternative to the first section of the Otago Central Rail Trail.

This trail is also a great way to join the Lake Dunstan Trail with the Roxburgh Gorge Trail without needing to transport your bikes in between. You'll find the start/finish of this trail at the Alexandra Bridge and Clyde's Earnscleugh Bridge.

Smith's Way - 55km to Clyde

'Smith's Way' is the name of a small side road off the side of SH6, a 15 minute drive from Cromwell towards Wanaka. Starting from Smith's Way requires a shuttle from Cromwell that can easily be added on to your trip. This 16km section of trail is relatively flat and meanders alongside Lake Dunstan and the inlets of Pisa Mooring to the Cromwell Heritage Precinct.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"> </carouselsource>

Highlands - 38km to Clyde

Trail Journeys' Cromwell depot is located at Highlands Motorsport Park. You can leave your car here, pick up your hire bikes, have a coffee, and join up with the trail along Bannockburn Road. From here it is a 38km ride through the most popular section of trail to Clyde. No shuttles required.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"> </carouselsource>

Cromwell Heritage Precinct - 40km to Clyde

A popular starting point and pre-ride coffee stop, the historic buildings, boutique shops and lake-side views are well worth a look around. If you are starting from our Highlands depot, you can easily add on a shuttle here to start your ride.

It's also possible to start from Bannockburn Inlet or Pigeon Rock further down the trail. So when I told them that I was 86, they said “you have to write an article for our magazine”. This is my story.

My daughter Sarah had been planning to make this trip before Covid-19 hit us. We finally arrived in Queenstown on 14 November 2020, and got going on the next day. With the assistance of the staff at Trail Journeys, Sarah had arranged a five-day trip with lots of excursions that such a leisurely pace allows. But we still did 175 km in total.

Sarah was confident that I could do the trip, because I was born in the Netherlands, and thus “born on a bike” as some people claim. I keep myself in reasonable shape by trying to go the gym twice a week [I don’t always succeed], and my wife makes sure that we eat healthy meals. In Clyde, we stayed at the historical Dunstan House and had a magnificent dinner at Oliver’s. The next day, we got our bikes in Clyde: Sarah on an ordinary bike, and me on an electric one. I had ridden one in Wellington a few times along the waterfront, but I don’t own one, so I was shown the ropes.

Arriving in Alexandra, we had the first example of generous southern hospitality: the manager of Asure Avenue Motel lent us a car so that we did not have to leave our bikes at the boat ramp there. We were concerned that they might get stolen. The jet boat cruise on Lake Roxburgh with Laurence van der Eb was fantastic and we saw real Chinese bivouacs from goldmining days. Those men did it hard. Once back on terra firma, we drove the car back to Clyde to see the booking office and little museum, next to Dunstan House, where Laurence’s wife treated us to some gold bars made of soap.

From Alexandra we cycled to Omakau in the rain. We stopped at Chatto Creek to have lunch and see its post office which was in a tiny hut but obviously well used in its hey days. When we got to Omakau, we met up with some old friends and the sun had come out so that we could dry everything very smartly. We were taken to Black’s Hotel at Ophir for an enjoyable pub meal with friendly locals. The next day, we went back to Ophir to see not only the suspension bridge but of course, the famous post office which is the longest continuously in operation post office in NZ. And you can get the local stamp on your postcards, done by your own fair hand under careful supervision of its manager Val.

The trip from Ophir to Oturehua goes through impressive rock formations, and through the two Poolburn Gorge tunnels. The first one is quite long so we walked through it, using our headlights. But the second one was shorter and you could see the other end, so I thought I could cycle through it. That was a big mistake because halfway through, it got very dark. I panicked and slammed on the brakes so that I fell, and hurt my right elbow. No elbow pads!! Fortunately, I was wearing long sleeves and trousers which limited the damage. Of course, we stopped at the Hayes Engineering Works which is a testament to NZ ingenuity, especially for farmers, but the workshop would not meet OSH requirements these days with its belt-driven equipment and dirt floors. We spent so long looking through the works and the Hayes homestead that we were too late for the cafeteria. We were amused to learn that the power supply for the works also supplied the homestead, and that when the works stopped for the day, the power to the house was also switched off. Evenings by candlelight? That day was a long and tiring day, not helped by a fairly strong Nor-Wester. But the accommodation at Inverlair Lodge was magnificent, so that we could rest our weary bones.

<carouselsource aspectratio="4x3" data-plugin-options="{'items': 3, 'margin': 10, 'nav': true, 'dots': false}"><img alt="Eating Rabbit Pie in Naseby | Nick Lambrechtsen" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="788109" dynamiccroppedimage="1" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Australasia/New-Zealand/IMG_9177-788109-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Australasia/New-Zealand/IMG_9177-788109-###width###px.jpg" /> <img alt="Exiting Tunnel 13 on the Otago Rail Trail | Brad Atwal" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="788111" dynamiccroppedimage="1" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Australasia/New-Zealand/Otago-Central-Rail-Trail-788111-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Australasia/New-Zealand/Otago-Central-Rail-Trail-788111-###width###px.jpg" /> </carouselsource>

While in Oturehua, we visited the Gilchrist Store of course which is 2/3 museum and 1/3 real country store. There we ran into one of the trustees of the rail trail who talked us into getting the “Passport” which enables you to record all the stops on the way. Having passed several stops already, we were assured that we could get the missing stamps at Wedderburn, and so it happened. The Passport also provides additional information on what to see along the trail. On the trip from Oturehua to Ranfurly, we came past the highest point and were told that it was downhill from then on. But thanks to a southerly wind, it was no freewheeling. At Wedderburn, we enjoyed seeing the historical videos, all 6 of them. When we got to Ranfurly, we saw the Sun, having seen the planets of the solar system at the right distance from the sun along the trail. This wonderful initiative, called the Otago Central Interplanetary Cycle Trail, was developed with assistance from Associate Prof Antoni Moore, University of Otago. We were taken to the historic township `Naseby to go curling at the internationally famous Indoor Curling Rink. It was a great experience and a lot of fun. We had a delicious dinner at the Royal Hotel of rabbit pie which helped to bring the rabbit population down a little bit. Rabbits are again a big problem in Central Otago, and the highly skilled rabbiters seem to be in short supply.

The next day we visited Kyeburn Diggings by 4-wheel drive of Off Trail Tours, and had a great discussion on the proper management of the high-country tussock grasslands which are now under DoC control. Most runholders think that DoC is allowing the build-up of a huge fire risk which it won’t be able to control if a fire were to break out. Time will tell but the recent Ohau fire does not augur well. The Kyeburn Diggings are impressive white quartz gold tailings which are being ruined by hoons in 4-wheel drive vehicles, much to the dismay of our driver George.

From Ranfurly we cycled to Waipiata where we had a very generous lunch at the hotel. Then through the Taieri Gorge. Walked over the bridges because they can shake you up badly with the uneven decking, and through the Prices Creek Tunnel. Overnighted at the Hyde Lodge and Cottage where we had the Lodge to ourselves. A very elaborate dinner was waiting for us. The wind had been from the south, so still no free-wheeling!

The final day from Hyde to Middlemarch went through the Taieri River valley with the Rock and Pillar Range on one side and the Taieri Ridge on the other side. By this stage my back side was getting quite sore in spite of the gel seat covers that were provided. Moreover, I kept sliding forward on the seat which was annoying; did not manage to adjust the tilt of the seat. But it was again impressive countryside to cycle through. Although there was a bit of a Nor-wester, we did not see the famous Taieri Pet cloud formation.

At Middlemarch, we were lucky that the Strath Taieri Museum was open, being a Friday. Although the museum has an amazing collection of local history, I was even more lucky to speak with one of the volunteers who happened to be one of NZ’s prominent Merino breeders, Rod Jones. So we had another great yarn about how the high country should be managed. I have a special affinity for the high country since I worked there as a scientist in the 1960’s. This was a fitting end to a great trip which I would not have been able to make without the careful support of my daughter Sarah.

After 175 km, we handed in our bikes at the Trail Journeys office, and were taken back to Dunedin, after promising to write this story. Dr Nick Lambrechtsen QSM, Wellington.

Cycling as a family promotes a positive, healthy lifestyle, which encourages many children to keep biking well into their adult life.

Trail Journeys has a range of family friendly cycling trips in the Central Otago region with plenty of flexibility built into them. From the Roxburgh Gorge to the Otago Central Rail Trail our self-guided trips offers the bonus off being luggage-free, with your bags shuttled from each accommodation to the next as well has having your meals, accommodation and route planning taken care of.

Here’s our top 5 reasons why family cycling holidays are good for you

1. It gets you outside.

<img alt="Start of the Otago Central Rail Trail in Clyde |  Philip Wyndham" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="717897" dynamiccroppedimage="1" flexibleaspectratio="16x7" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Australasia/New-Zealand/Otago-Rail-Trail-717897-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Australasia/New-Zealand/Otago-Rail-Trail-717897-###width###px.jpg">

A cycling holiday offers the opportunity to explore the outdoors and be fully interactive with the environment you’re in. It's a great way to get up and close with nature, breathe in some fresh air, and create some ever lasting memories.

2. It's great for everyone's fitness

<img alt="Trail Journeys transport for the little ones! |  Lachlan Gardiner" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="717891" dynamiccroppedimage="1" flexibleaspectratio="16x7" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Australasia/New-Zealand/LachlanGardiner_TrailJourneys_OTAGO_DAY_05-HIGHRES-8032-717891-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Australasia/New-Zealand/LachlanGardiner_TrailJourneys_OTAGO_DAY_05-HIGHRES-8032-717891-###width###px.jpg">

Biking holidays are great for health and fitness, and encourage the whole family to be active, regardless of age, ability and fitness levels. Younger children can cycle on a tag-along, while older children develop a healthy competitive spirit to keep up with their parents, as long as the routes aren’t overly hilly or too long.

3. Learn about New Zealand

<img alt="Kids finding out which way to go! |  Philip Wyndham" class="responsiveImage" cropdataid="717892" dynamiccroppedimage="1" flexibleaspectratio="16x7" largestloadedsize="1100" src="/croppedImages/Australasia/New-Zealand/Otago-Rail-Trail-717892-1100px.jpg" variablesrc="/croppedImages/Australasia/New-Zealand/Otago-Rail-Trail-717892-###width###px.jpg">

Experiential learning is one of the most engaging ways for anyone to learn. The whole family will learn about world famous natural landmarks, cultural sites, and the history of a region. Your children may also be exposed to different ways of life that they are not used to, helping their resiliance and confidence. <carouselsource aspectratio="16x9">There's even a scale model of the solar system along the trail. </carouselsource>
