This is a very popular tour
Trail Journeys has packaged up a variety of independent cycle tours on the Otago Central Railtrail. This tour is a very popular option. To cycle the trail over 5 days gives you plenty of opportunities to explore the Central Otago area. We offer extra options to finish off with a trip on the Taieri Gorge Excursion Train to Dunedin or to return to Queenstown from Clyde. (Neither options included in price)
Cycle the Central Otago Rail Trail in style . We provide cycle rental, transport, accommodation, bag transfer and any other activities that you select from our cupboard of goodies.
It's not only about the bike!
This independent tour offers you the opportunity to meet new people when you cycle along, at your accommodation or over diner after an exhilerating day on the trail. It has been said that the trail trip is going from one experience to another, using a cycle as a means of getting there. In other words, "It is not only about the bike"
Along the trail you will have opportunities to take part in off trail activities. Trail Journeys can arrange these for you and would recommend the following. In Naseby the International Curling Rink provides the opportunity to take part in the ancient Scottish sport of Curling. (Many more, just ask our team in the office)
World of Difference
As you pass through the spectacular scenery that Central Otago offers, you can understand why it is called "The World of Difference". A landscape that is unique to "Central" (as the locals call it), is embraced as you cycle your way along the trail. You can travel the world and not see anything that resembles the uniqueness of the area, the giant rock tors, the unusual rolling tussock covered hills and the trout laden rivers just add to the experience.
Accommodation is all locally operated and consists of hotels, lodge, motel and bed-and-breakfast accommodation. All accommodation will be on a twin share basis. Because accommodation along the trail is varied, we cannot guarantee en-suite facilities. This is an opportunity of a lifetime to experience Central Otago wilderness without sacrificing your comforts or convenience.
Food and Refreshments
After an invigorating day riding on the Rail Trail you will have worked up quite an appetite. All evening and mid-day meals are available in locally operated hotels. A selection of Central Otago local wines, beer and soft drinks are available for purchase from the hotel bar throughout the evening. Breakfast offers a selection of fruit and cereal, and toast and spreads. Just what is needed to send you on your way. For those with special dietary requests or requirements, let us know at the time of booking and we will endeavor to cater for your needs.
Health and Fitness
The cycle ride is neither easy nor difficult. It is a challenge and adventure which people of all ages and abilities will relish. To enjoy your ride you need to be able to cycle 4 to 6 hours each day at a leisurely pace, and a distance of 29km to 45km per day. We encourage you to cycle/ride at your own pace, there is no pressure to cycle/ride with others or keep up with the fastest riders. The track surface is generally well formed and a maximum gradient of 1m in 70m. If you are not a regular cyclist/rider we suggest you begin a daily cycling regime for 4 to 6 weeks before departure, gradually increasing the distance you ride. Thousands of cyclists are enjoying riding the Central Otago Rail Trail each year, of all ages with 85% of cyclists/ riders being between the age of 45 to 70 and beyond.

Hi Hannah, I’ve only just got back from NZ, having spent time in the Nth Island & around Akoroa, but just wanted to thank you for the work you did for our 2 groups. Your company runs a very slick operation & everything seems to work smoothly. The bikes were excellent and all of the accommodation you had booked was great. Not really knowing what the accommodation would be like, after the first night at Blacks Hotel we all thought if this was the standard throughout we would all be very happy! My group were lucky enough to have all gone to the evening dinner at the old Hyde school house which was a highlight and a fitting place for our last night on the trail. We were amazed at the availability & quality of the meals that were available along the ride, a real separate “economy” has sprung up along the route as a result of the bike track and we are all trying to work out how we can try to utilize some of our disused railway lines around here!! Anyway thank you again for your input into making our 2 groups Rail Trail experience such a great success.
