Difficulty: Easy

Cycle through one of the most spectacular gorges on the famous Otago Central Rail Trail, over viaducts and through tunnels. This package also includes side trips to historic Ophir and St Bathans where your guide will share his local knowledge with you.

 Cycling on a vehicle free trail with an easy gradient, this package is ideal for all ages and experience. An e-bike upgrade is also available. 

Day 1

Omakau to Lauder

Distance: 7km

  Meals: Lunch Omakau Hotel

Trail Journeys will pick you up from your accommodation in Queenstown and bring you to Clyde, a little hidden gem where there is great coffee and plenty to take in. We will then take you via the quaint town of Ophir to start your ride in Omakau. It is an easy ride through to Lauder where you will stay at Lauder School with hosts Esmé and Bruce McDonald. Dinner at the local hotel across the road and includes a special wine tasting with Knobby, the local wine aficionado.

Day 2

Lauder to Oturehua

Distance: 22.5km

  Meals: Lunch Oturehua Hotel

After breakfast, the first section takes you through the spectacular Poolburn Gorge, home of the rare New Zealand falcon, where the trail crosses viaducts and takes you through two tunnels. The gorge then opens out to the Ida Valley, made famous by Graeme Sydney’s paintings. 

Just before Oturehua you can visit the historic Hayes Engineering – an important part of New Zealand’s farming history, and in the village the old Gilchrist’s Store is a must. After lunch with Liz and Graham, at the local hotel, you will be collected by George and taken on a tour to the gold mining town of St Bathans and onto Naseby. Here you can try your hand at curling - laughter will abound! Accommodation for tonight is at Naseby Lodge with dinner at their restaurant - 2000ft above sea level!

Day 3

Ranfurly to Hyde

Distance: 32.5km

  Meals: Packed Lunch Waipiata

George will be back in the morning to collect you from Naseby and take you to Ranfurly where you continue cycling through to Hyde. This section the trail takes you close to the Taieri River, over more viaducts and through another tunnel. At Hyde our shuttle will collect you and bring you back to our base in Clyde and after a short stop you will be driven back to Queenstown.

Group Discounts

Cycling the trails in our area is great fun when you are part of a group and Trail Journeys is happy to offer a group discount for groups of 8 or more people.
If you book your 8 or more bikes with Trail Journeys then the group organizer will receive their bike hire free.  That’s an amazing saving of $45.00 per day.  Please contact our office for more details.
