Otago Central Rail Trail Information
One of the most famous and popular cycle trails in New Zealand is the Otago Central Rail Trail with its dramatic scenery and rich gold mining history.
The Otago Central Rail Trail is New Zealand’s original “Great Ride”. Opened in the year 2000 the trail is 152kms of scenic cycle trail following the old Central Otago Railway Line from Middlemarch to Clyde.
Experience the incredible, unique landscape and friendly hospitality that Central Otago has to offer while taking your time to explore this area by bike.
From stunning mountain ranges, impressive viaducts and bridges, farmland, orchards, tunnels and spectacular river gorges this trail has it all.
With its wide gravel surface and a gentle gradient of 1 to 50 this trail is ideal for walkers, families and cyclists of varying fitness and abilities. This is a superb holiday activity for a group of friends or family trip.
Complement your cycle trail adventure with off-trail activities along the way such as a river cruise in Alexandra, curling in Naseby, 4WD tours and much more. Here at Trail Journeys we can arrange not only accommodation, bike hire, transport and luggage transfers but also booking these off-trail activities.
If you are looking at cycling the whole trail then the most popular option is between 3-5 days depending on how far you wish to cycle each day and the activities you may like to include in your trip. Day trips and guided tours are also popular options.
The Taieri Gorge Train operates most days from Dunedin to Middlemarch or Pukerangi (just outside of Middlemarch) and return. This is an excellent way to relax, reflect on your trip and enjoy this scenic train trip back to Dunedin.
The trail itself is open year round with about 20 small townships to explore with delicious food and welcoming accommodation.
