  • Experience the local 'southern hospitality' of Central Otago

Combine the tunnels and viaduct section of the iconic Otago Central Rail Trail with the new Lake Dunstan Trail and spectacular Roxburgh Gorge on this 3 day self-guided trip.

You'll cycle from Historic Hayes Engineering to Chatto Creek on the Otago Central Rail Trail through the Poolburn Gorge, through the stunning Cromwell Gorge on the Lake Dunstan Trail and the vibrant Roxburgh Gorge featuring a jet-boat transfer. Learn about the gold mining history, and see the remaining relics scattered along the hill-side and enjoy a 2 night stay in Clyde.

Your accommodation is centre based in Clyde, which means settling in, unpacking your bags, and not needing to worry about packing each night. All you need to do is pedal and unwind from everyday life.

Scroll down to view the full itinerary, select your dates and fill out our booking form (please note this is tentative).

We’ll collect you from Queenstown or you can make you own way to our depot in Clyde. After a morning briefing and bike fitting at our Clyde Depot you’ll tour Hayes Engineering, a bite of lunch, then set off on the Otago Rail Trail finishing your ride at Chatto Creek Hotel. We'll collect you from there and take you to your accommodation.

Meals:  Nil

There are a number of distance options on the Lake Dunstan Trail. Ride the full 55km trail from Smith’s Way, just out of Cromwell to Clyde along Lake Dunstan, the Kawarau River and the stunning Cromwell Gorge. Or ride a shortened version of 33km. Key features of the trail are the man-made landscapes, superb views from the trail summit, abundant vineyards and cellar doors in Bannockburn and the Historical Precinct in Cromwell. After completing the ride we’ll take you on wine tour or if you prefer a 4WD tour (included).

Meals:  B,L

Start your day today with a cycle from Clyde through to Alexandra, either 8kms down the Rail Trail or 14kms kilometres on the slightly more technical, but scenic river track. From Alexandra, you start the Roxburgh gorge, with a 10kms cycle to Doctors Point where you join the jet-boat transfer to Shingle Creek. Keep an eye out for historic gold mining relics and huts as you make your way through the gorge. A highlight for many, with commentary of the gold mining history scattered in the hillside. From Shingle Creek it is a further 11kms through to the Roxburgh Hydro where you will be picked up this afternoon and shuttled back through to Clyde or Queenstown.

Grading

Introductory to Moderate
4

The 3 day Otago Rail Trail, Lake Dunstan and Roxburgh Gorge is graded Introductory to Moderate. The Lake Dunstan and Roxburgh Gorge Trails have a mix of introductory and moderate trails that include some narrow, hilly and remote sections with some tight turns. If you are not a regular cyclist or are worried about these features, we recommend practicing riding on similar features at home before your trip. The more training you have done on compacted gravel ad undulating hills the more enjoyable your trip will be. E-bikes are also suitable as long as they are ridden appropriately and have sufficient battery capacity.
