The wait is over! New Zealand’s newest cycle trail has arrived, and we’ve combined it with some of the region’s most scenic trails to create one epic two-day ride from Queenstown to Cromwell.

Perfect for weekend explorers, short-break getaways or as an add-on to a longer cycling adventure, this journey brings together spectacular river gorges, peaceful countryside, historic goldfields and the celebrated wine country of Central Otago.

Your cycle begins on the Shotover Trail, following the Lower Shotover Gorge alongside striking turquoise waters and rugged cliffs. Pass through the historic Hugo Tunnel and cross the Kimi-akau Bridge at Tucker Beach before cycling through open countryside towards Arrowtown. From here, follow the picturesque Arrow River Trail, with reminders of the region’s gold mining past, before continuing into Gibbston Valley. Surrounded by vineyards and dramatic mountain landscapes, you’ll also have the opportunity to experience Ayrburn, with its beautifully restored historic buildings, landscaped grounds and tempting local food and wine. After approximately 43 km (27 mi) of riding, it’s time to relax and enjoy the valley.

Then comes the trail you’ve been waiting for - the new Kawarau Gorge Trail. This spectacular ride takes you through the dramatic Kawarau River Gorge towards Cromwell, with sections of trail hugging the gorge above the vivid blue waters of the Kawarau River. Boardwalks, bridges and elevated viewpoints add a real sense of adventure, while around almost every corner there’s another incredible view.

Along the way, you’ll also discover traces of Central Otago’s gold rush heritage, from old miners’ routes and tunnels to remnants of historic water races and sluicing sites.

In just two days, you’ll experience an incredible cross-section of Central Otago - rivers, mountains, vineyards, gold mining history and one of New Zealand’s most exciting new cycling trails. A short escape that delivers a seriously memorable ride.

This morning we pick you up from your Queenstown accommodation, set you up on your bikes and brief you on the trails you will be riding over the next couple of days, before you set of on the trails. The cycle starts on the Shotover Trail, where you’ll cycle alongside the breathtaking Shotover River, enjoying views of rugged cliffs and lush surroundings. Transition onto the Countryside Trail, soaking in the serene beauty of rolling farmlands, before heading to the Arrow River Trail. Here, you’ll encounter historic gold mining sites and picturesque river views. Your journey continues to the Gibbston Valley Trail, famous for its vineyards. After a day of adventure, unwind in the valley, savoring fine local wines and delicious cuisine in a tranquil setting.

You will set off this morning from your Gibbston Valley accommodation, to join the brand new Kawarau Gorge Trail. This spectacular ride follows the Kawarau Gorge through one of Central Otago’s most dramatic landscapes. Pedal alongside the turquoise waters of the Kawarau River, passing renowned vineyards, historic gold mining sites and rugged schist cliffs as the trail winds through the gorge. Featuring impressive suspension bridges, elevated boardwalks and breathtaking bluff-top sections, this approximately 38km journey offers a rewarding mix of adventure and scenery. As part of the newest link connecting the Queenstown and Central Otago trail networks, the route delivers an unforgettable cycling experience before finishing at Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell, surrounded by vineyards, mountain views and the relaxed atmosphere of Central Otago wine country. From Highlands, we will transfer you back through to Queenstown this afternoon where your journey ends.

Bike information

Electric Bike

E-bikes have made cycle touring possible and pleasurable for a wide range of people. They are simple to operate, and eliminate much of the cycling strain from legs and knees. Our European-designed E-bikes are built with comfort and ease of operation in mind, and feature unisex frames, 29” wheels, front suspension and proven Bosch electronics.

Standard Trail Bike

Our trail bikes are ideal for the Otago Central Rail Trail and other similar gravel trails. They feature an upright riding position, front suspension and a gel seat for maximum comfort. With their Australasian-designed Avanti frames and proven Shimano and Tektro componentry, these bikes ensure the best possible riding experience.

Low Step Trail Bike

Our low-step trail bikes are ideal for the Otago Central Rail Trail and other similar gravel trails. They feature an upright riding position, front suspension, swept back handlebars and a gel seat for maximum comfort, and a low-step frame to make getting on and off easy. With their Australasian-designed Avanti frames and proven Shimano and Tektro componentry, these bikes ensure the best possible riding experience.

Grading

Introductory to Moderate  

The Kawarau Gorge Trail has some difficult sections and is for experienced cyclists. Be prepared for sections with high bluffs, bridges and drop offs. The terrain is undulating with 'clip-on' boardwalks. Suitable for confident riders. Mix of introductory and moderate sections that include some narrow, hilly and remote sections with some tight turns. If you are not a regular cyclist or are worried about these features, we recommend practicing riding on similar features at home before your trip. The more training you have done on compacted gravel ad undulating hills the more enjoyable your trip will be. Confidence and previous experience on an e-bike is highly recommended.

There will be one morning transfer from Queenstown Accom to the trail start, and one in the afternoon from Cromwell back to Queenstown.
