Alps 2 Ocean Day Cycle

The ride from Omarama to Otematata is one of the most scenic and rewarding sections of the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, combining flowing riding, spectacular lake views and an unforgettable wilderness atmosphere through the heart of the Waitaki Valley. Following the shores of Lake Benmore beneath expansive South Island skies, this ride delivers an incredible mix of adventure, scenery and classic high-country landscapes.

Leaving Omarama, famous for its gliding skies and dramatic alpine setting, this day cycle begins with a steady climb over the Chain Hills. The effort is quickly rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views stretching across the Mackenzie Basin, surrounding mountains and the vivid blue waters of the Waitaki hydro lakes below.

From here, enjoy a thrilling descent towards the shimmering edge of Lake Benmore, New Zealand’s largest man-made lake. The trail hugs the shoreline through remote backcountry landscapes, winding across rocky headlands and quiet bays where every turn reveals another spectacular view. With golden tussock hills, turquoise water and rugged mountain scenery all around, this section feels wonderfully untouched and remote.

A highlight along the route is Sailors Cutting, a peaceful lakeside spot that perfectly captures the beauty and tranquillity of the region. Continuing along the lake, the trail meanders beside the shoreline, creating a constantly changing backdrop and an immersive riding experience from start to finish.

The day finishes with a fast descent towards the impressive Benmore Dam before arriving in the hydro village of Otematata. Here, relax with a cold drink, coffee or well-earned meal at the famous Best Dam Pub. the perfect way to celebrate a fantastic day on the trail.
