The Roxburgh Gorge Trail in New Zealand’s stunning Central Otago region runs from Alexandra to Lake Roxburgh Dam following the beautiful Clutha River. This exciting Cycle Trail gives you the opportunity to head away from the more popular Otago Central Rail Trail to explore the more remote and unique Roxburgh Gorge.
The Roxburgh Gorge Trail is a one-day ride filled with incredible scenery and gold-mining history and can be cycled in either direction and includes a 12km boat trip along a section that is not accessible by bike.
From Alexandra to Doctors Point is 10kms of Cycle Trail, followed by 12kms by boat and another 12kms of cycling from Shingle Creek to Lake Roxburgh Dam.
You can cycle the Roxburgh Gorge Trail all year round. The trail features a well-formed gravel surface and some climbs. It will take four to five hours to complete, depending on how you choose to experience it and of course your fitness level.
The Roxburgh Gorge Trail finishes at the Lake Roxburgh Dam and from here you can connect with the Clutha Gold Trail, which travels through to Lawrence. There is also the option to connect the Roxburgh Gorge Trail with the Otago Central Rail Trail in Alexandra for the ultimate Central Otago cycling trip.
NOTE: A voluntary contribution of NZ$25 per person or NZ$50 per family covers the cost of trail maintenance for the use of the Roxburgh Gorge Trail. The fee also covers the use of the Clutha Gold Trail, which follows on from the Roxburgh Gorge Trail.

Our fleet of 400+ bikes ensures our clients are individually fitted with the correct bike for their needs. These bikes are selected specifically for use on the trail, and we have a variety of styles, including power assist e-bikes. Each bike is fully serviced after every trip so you can be confident in the quality of the equipment provided.
We are the largest transport provider on the trail. Not only do we provide pick-up services from Queenstown and Dunedin, but bags, people and bikes are also moved daily along the length of the trail. You can be assured of our support should an unforeseen circumstances arise.
Our custom designed bikes have been built to specifically handle the trail conditions found on the Otago Central Rail Trail and other New Zealand's Cycle Trails. Comfort, reliability and practicality were the guiding factors in our revolutionary designs that include: puncture resistant tyres, comfortable gel seats, reliable Shimano componentry, front suspension and strong lightweight rear carrier with carrier bags or a set of panniers (saddle bags)*
