Trip highlights

  • Ride from the base of Aoraki / Mt Cook all the way to the Pacific Ocean on New Zealand’s longest Great Rides
  • Enjoy a breathtaking heli-flight over the Tasman River from Aoraki Mt Cook Village
  • Cycle along the edges of Lakes Ohau, Benmore and Aviemore
  • Visit iconic South Island highlights including Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park, the Waitaki Valley and Elephant Rocks
  • Finish in the historic Victorian town of Oamaru, famous for its heritage buildings, great food and little blue penguins

The Classic Alps 2 Ocean Cycle - Aoraki / Mt Cook to Oamaru is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular multi-day cycling adventures, taking riders from the shadow of the country’s highest mountain all the way to the historic coastal town of Oamaru. Spanning an extraordinary range of landscapes, this unforgettable journey combines alpine scenery, vivid turquoise lakes, dramatic river valleys and peaceful rural countryside into one of the South Island’s most rewarding rides.

Beginning at the official trailhead, beneath the towering peaks of Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park, the self-guided cycle starts with breathtaking views across the glacial waters of Lake Pukaki, famous for its unreal shades of blue and stunning mountain backdrop. From here, the journey flows south through the Mackenzie Basin and Waitaki Valley, where you'll ride through New Zealand’s only UNESCO Global Geopark, home to extraordinary geological formations and layers of cultural history.

Each day follows a network of purpose-built cycle trails, quiet country roads and scenic lakeside tracks, revealing a completely different side of the South Island. Ride alongside the shimmering shores of Lake Ohau and Lake Benmore, cross sweeping high-country landscapes and descend through rugged valleys carved by ancient glaciers. The trail winds through remote hydro landscapes, peaceful farmland and charming small towns, each with its own unique character and welcoming country hospitality.

Highlights along the way include the spectacular Benmore Dam, the striking limestone formations of Elephant Rocks and the constantly changing scenery of the Waitaki Valley, where golden tussock hills contrast against brilliant blue waterways and expansive South Island skies.

As the trail gradually descends towards the coast, the landscape transforms once again into rolling countryside and rich farmland before arriving in the beautifully preserved Victorian town of Oamaru. Known for its historic architecture, vibrant arts scene and famous little blue penguins, Oamaru provides the perfect finale to this unforgettable cycling journey.

With mostly achievable gradients, rewarding daily distances and seamless support throughout, the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is suitable for a wide range of cyclists looking to experience the diversity and beauty of New Zealand by bike. Whether riding for the scenery, the challenge or the sense of adventure, the journey from Aoraki / Mt Cook to Oamaru delivers an extraordinary cycling experience from mountains to sea.

This iconic self-guided cycle journey gives you the freedom to ride with ease, knowing our friendly team is there should you need assistance.

We'll meet you at our depot at 16 Chain Hills Highway, Omarama, at 7:30am for a pre-ride briefing and bike fitting. If you're arriving by car, you're welcome to leave your vehicle at our base while you're away on the trail. From Omarama, enjoy a 1.5 hour shuttle ride to the Mt Cook Airfield, where you’ll board a short scenic helicopter transfer, operated by Southern Lakes Helicopters, across the braided Tasman River to the Rotten Tommy landing site. (Optional scenic flight upgrades are available—just ask!) From there, your ride begins along the shores of stunning Lake Pukaki, with incredible views of Aoraki/Mt Cook. You'll then continue across the open plains of the Pukaki Flats, arriving in Twizel for your first overnight stay. Accommodation: Twizel. Want to soak up the alpine magic even earlier? Ask us about spending a pre-tour night under the stars at Aoraki/Mt Cook.

Today’s destination is Omarama, but consider a side trip to the otherworldly Clay Cliffs. This 7km detour (each way) along a gravel road leads to dramatic natural pinnacles and sculpted formations, shaped by wind and water over thousands of years. Just beyond the turnoff, you’ll find Quailburn Farm Store - an ideal refreshment stop with self-serve ice creams and snacks to keep you fuelled for the final stretch. Accommodation: Omarama

Grading

Introductory to Moderate
4

The Alps to Ocean is graded introductory to moderate. You will need a reasonable level of fitness with an average daily distance of 50km and the longest day up to 75km. We suggest 90 minutes of cycling three to five times a week for the three months leading up to your trip. Some of the sections are on seal or hard packed gravel and are relatively easy to ride. Other sections are on looser gravel which can be rough and uneven in places. The moderate sections over the Tarnbrae Saddle and from Sailors Cutting to the Benmore Dam include narrower tracks with some switchbacks and exposure in places. There are also plenty of hills so cycling up hills and on gravel and rougher terrain before your tour will enable you to really enjoy the fantastic riding and diverse scenery.
