Beginning beneath the towering peaks of Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park and finishing beside the shores of Lake Aviemore in Otematata, this fully supported journey delivers a condensed yet incredibly rewarding taste of the A2O experience.

Perfect for those with limited time, the itinerary covers approximately 191km of diverse and unforgettable landscapes, combining alpine scenery, vivid turquoise lakes, remote high-country riding and one of the trail’s most memorable adventure experiences with a scenic helicopter transfer across the Tasman River near Aoraki / Mt Cook.

Starting from the official Alps 2 Ocean trailhead, the journey begins with breathtaking views of New Zealand’s highest mountain and the brilliant glacial waters of Lake Pukaki. Ride through the wide open landscapes of the Mackenzie Basin, where endless big skies, golden tussock country and snow-capped peaks create one of the South Island’s most spectacular cycling environments.

As the trail continues south, the scenery constantly evolves. Follow quiet backcountry trails beside the shimmering waters of Lake Ohau and through peaceful high-country landscapes rich in natural beauty and tranquillity. Purpose-built cycle paths and quiet rural roads provide rewarding riding while allowing time to fully appreciate the scale and beauty of the region.

One of the standout highlights of the journey is the newest and most spectacular off-road section of the entire Alps 2 Ocean trail — the ride from Sailors Cutting to Benmore Dam. Hugging the shoreline of Lake Benmore, this remarkable section winds through rugged headlands and remote lakeside landscapes with dramatic views around every corner. The combination of turquoise water, rocky terrain and untouched wilderness creates an unforgettable riding experience and a true sense of adventure.

The final ride into Otematata delivers a memorable finish, with a flowing descent towards the hydro village nestled amongst the lakes and rivers of the Waitaki Valley. Relax with a drink or meal at the famous Best Dam Pub and soak up the laid-back atmosphere after several rewarding days on the trail.

Day 1
Cycle from the Alps 2 Ocean trailhead at Aoraki Mt Cook to Twizel (75km/46.60mi)

We'll meet you at our Omarama depot at for a pre-ride briefing and bike fitting. From Omarama, enjoy a 1.5 hour shuttle ride to the Mt Cook Airfield, where you’ll board a short scenic helicopter transfer, operated by Southern Lakes Helicopters, across the braided Tasman River to the Rotten Tommy landing site. (Optional scenic flight upgrades are available—just ask!) From there, your ride begins along the shores of stunning Lake Pukaki, with incredible views of Aoraki/Mt Cook. You'll then continue across the open plains of the Pukaki Flats, arriving in Twizel for your first overnight stay. Accommodation: Twizel. Want to soak up the alpine magic even earlier? Ask us about spending a pre-tour night under the stars at Aoraki/Mt Cook.

Day 2
Cycle Twizel to Lake Ohau (32-38km/19.88-23.61mi)

Today, as you depart Twizel, you’ll follow a picturesque trail alongside the vibrant turquoise canals, before reaching the canal control gates. The ride continues around the southern edge of Lake Ohau, framed by the breathtaking backdrop of the Southern Alps. Along the way, take time to enjoy a relaxed picnic or even a refreshing swim in the lake’s clear waters. Day 3
Cycle from Lake Ohau to Omarama (43-49km/26.72-30.44mi)

From Lake Ohau Lodge, begin a steady climb to the highest point on the Alps to Ocean trail, Tarnbrae Saddle, sitting at 900 metres above sea level. The effort is rewarded with sweeping panoramic views back over Lake Ohau and a final, memorable glimpse of Aoraki/Mt Cook. Today’s destination is Omarama, but consider a side trip to the otherworldly Clay Cliffs. This 7km detour (each way) along a gravel road leads to dramatic natural pinnacles and sculpted formations, shaped by wind and water over thousands of years. Just beyond the turnoff, you’ll find Quailburn Farm Store - an ideal refreshment stop with self-serve ice creams and snacks to keep you fuelled for the final stretch. Day 4
Cycle Omarama to Otematata (35km/21.74mi)

Leaving Omarama, the first 5km leads you to the top of the Chain Hills, where breathtaking views await you. Descend to the shimmering edge of Lake Benmore, where you'll find the perfect campsite at Sailors Cutting. From here, the trail meanders along the lake's shoreline, immersing you in a true wilderness experience. As you zigzag over headlands, prepare to be awestruck by the incredible vistas that unfold at every turn. Once at the impressive Benmore hydro dam descend through the wetlands and alongside Lake Aviemore to reach the small hydro town of Otematata. Our afternoon shuttle will pick you up from Otematata at 4:30 pm and transfer you back to our depot in Omarama.

Day 1
Cycle from the trailhead in Tekapo to Twizel (55km/34.17mi)

We'll meet you at our depot at 16 Chain Hills Highway, Omarama, at 8:30am for your pre-ride briefing and bike fitting. If you're travelling by car, you're welcome to leave your vehicle at our base while you're away on the trail. After your briefing, we’ll shuttle you approximately 1 hour to the trail start in Tekapo, where your ride begins. You’ll follow the turquoise canal paths and peaceful gravel roads, enjoying wide open Mackenzie Country landscapes and panoramic views of the Southern Alps as you make your way towards Lake Pukaki. From there, continue across the vast Pukaki Flats to Twizel, your first overnight stop. Accommodation: Twizel. Want to make the most of your time in the high country? Ask us about adding a pre-tour night in the stunning lakeside resort of Tekapo and soaking up the stars at the Dark Sky Reserve.

Hybrid Touring Bike

Our range of Merida Crossway 100 are comfortable hybrid touring bikes with front suspension, hydraulic disc brakes, 27 speed

Standard equipment included: rear trunk bag with drop-down sides, helmet, gel seat, bottle cage, hi-visibility vest, pump and spare tube (one per two bikes).

Electric Bike

Our E-bikes (if you have chosen the upgrade) - are a Jaunt EZ 3.5 Auto or similar. Its spacious full step-through frame and suspension dropper seat post offer easy mounting and dismounting for riders of all levels. With advanced automatic gear shifting, you’re always in the perfect gear, enhancing comfort and efficiency. Equipped with Shimano’s Link-Glide technology for smooth, durable performance and a 630Wh battery, the Jaunt EZ 3.5 Auto provides pedal assistance up to 32 km/h.

Trail Surface

Compacted Gravel 45%

45% of the Alps 2 Ocean trail is compacted gravel. Cyclists need to be confident riding on uneven surfaces and aware that riding on this surface will reduce cycling speeds.

Rough Shingle 6%

6% of the Alps 2 Ocean trail is rough shingle. This can include rocks and rough terrain. Some cyclists will choose to walk these sections.

Gravel Road 18%

18% of the Alps 2 Ocean trail is gravel road. This is manageable for most, however cyclists need to be comfortable riding on rougher gravel surfaces including graded roads and deeper gravel.

Sealed Road 30%

30% of the Alps 2 Ocean trail is Sealed Road. Most of these roads are quiet back-roads. Cyclists need to be aware of the road rules and able to cope with small amounts of traffic.

Add an extra night in Omarama to unwind and make the most of this peaceful alpine town nestled between mountain ranges. Known for its wide-open skies and gliding activity, Omarama offers a great place to relax after a day on the trail. Take a soak in a private hot tub filled with fresh mountain water, visit the otherworldly Clay Cliffs, or enjoy a leisurely dinner at a nearby restaurant. This extra night gives you time to rest, recharge, and take in the serenity of the Mackenzie Country before continuing your journey.

Grading

Introductory to Moderate
4

The Alps 2 Ocean is graded introductory to moderate. You will need a reasonable level of fitness with an average daily distance of 45km and the longest day up to 75km. We suggest 90 minutes of cycling three to five times a week for the three months leading up to your trip. Some of the sections are on seal or hard packed gravel and are relatively easy to ride. Other sections are on looser gravel which can be rough and uneven in places. The moderate sections over the Tarnbrae Saddle and from Sailors Cutting to the Benmore Dam include narrower tracks with some switchbacks and exposure in places. There are also plenty of hills so cycling up hills and on gravel and rougher terrain before your tour will enable you to really enjoy the fantastic riding and diverse scenery.
