Alps 2 Ocean Cycle – Tekapo to Omarama Escape, is the stunning top half of the Alps 2 Ocean trail. This spectacular short cycling adventure through the heart of the Mackenzie Basin, showcasing some of the most scenic and memorable sections of New Zealand’s iconic Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. Perfect for travellers wanting an unforgettable South Island riding experience in a shorter timeframe or a weekend or mid week escape. This fully supported journey combines turquoise lakes, vast alpine landscapes and peaceful high-country trails into one rewarding short escape.

Beginning in the iconic lakeside village of Lake Tekapo, the journey starts beside the brilliant blue waters of the lake, framed by the snow-capped Southern Alps and the famous Church of the Good Shepherd. From here, the trail winds through classic Mackenzie Country scenery, following quiet canals, expansive tussock plains and remote backcountry trails that capture the beauty and scale of this remarkable region.

One of the true highlights of the ride is the spectacular approach towards Lake Pukaki, where the vivid glacial waters and uninterrupted views of Aoraki / Mt Cook create one of the most iconic cycling backdrops in New Zealand. The constantly changing colours of the lakes, combined with huge alpine vistas and fresh mountain air, make every day on the trail unforgettable.

As the ride continues south, enjoy peaceful riding beside hydro canals and through remote high-country landscapes before arriving at Omarama, a small alpine town renowned for its gliding skies, dramatic scenery and relaxing atmosphere. The region’s wide open spaces and ever-changing light create a true sense of freedom and escape throughout the journey.

With manageable daily distances, smooth trail surfaces and seamless support throughout, this itinerary is ideal for cyclists looking for a shorter Alps 2 Ocean experience that still delivers incredible scenery, rewarding riding and the relaxed pace of a classic South Island adventure.

Whether it’s the stunning turquoise lakes, the unforgettable mountain views or the quiet beauty of the Mackenzie Basin, the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle – Tekapo to Omarama Escape offers an incredible taste of one of New Zealand’s Great Rides, all in a bite sized piece that fits into a long weekend or mid week escape.

We'll meet you at our depot at 16 Chain Hills Highway, Omarama, at 8:30am for your pre-ride briefing and bike fitting. If you're travelling by car, you're welcome to leave your vehicle at our base while you're away on the trail. After your briefing, we’ll shuttle you approximately 1 hour to the trail start in Tekapo, where your ride begins. You’ll follow the turquoise canal paths and peaceful gravel roads, enjoying wide open Mackenzie Country landscapes and expansive views of the Southern Alps as you make your way towards Lake Pukaki. From there, continue across the vast Pukaki Flats to Twizel, your first overnight stop. Accommodation: Twizel. Want to make the most of your time in the high country? Ask us about adding a pre-tour night in the stunning lakeside resort of Tekapo and soaking up the stars at the Dark Sky Reserve.

Meals:  Nil

Today, as you depart Twizel, you’ll follow a picturesque trail alongside the vibrant turquoise canals, before reaching the canal control gates. The ride continues around the southern edge of Lake Ohau, framed by the breathtaking backdrop of the Southern Alps. Along the way, take time to enjoy a relaxed picnic or even a refreshing swim in the lake’s clear waters. Accommodation: Lake Ohau ** Please note: riding distance today may vary depending on accommodation availability.

Meals:  B,D

From Lake Ohau Lodge, begin a steady climb to the highest point on the Alps to Ocean trail, Tarnbrae Saddle, sitting at 900 metres above sea level. The effort is rewarded with sweeping views back over Lake Ohau and a final, memorable glimpse of Aoraki/Mt Cook. Today’s destination is Omarama, but consider a side trip to the otherworldly Clay Cliffs. This 7km detour (each way) along a gravel road leads to dramatic natural pinnacles and sculpted formations, shaped by wind and water over thousands of years. Just beyond the turnoff, you’ll find Quailburn Farm Store - an ideal refreshment stop with self-serve ice creams and snacks to keep you fuelled for the final stretch. We’ll meet you at our depot in Omarama, where you can collect your luggage and continue on with your journey. ** Please note: riding distance today may vary depending on accommodation availability.

Grading

Introductory to Moderate
4

The Alps 2 Ocean is graded introductory to moderate. You will need a reasonable level of fitness with an average daily distance of 45km and the longest day up to 55km. We suggest 90 minutes of cycling three to five times a week for the three months leading up to your trip. Some of the sections are on seal or hard packed gravel and are relatively easy to ride. Other sections are on looser gravel which can be rough and uneven in places. The moderate section over the Tarnbrae Saddle includes a narrower gravel track with a sustained gradual climb over 12km and exposure in places. Ensure you practise cycling up hills and on gravel and rougher terrain before your tour will enable you to really enjoy the fantastic riding and diverse scenery.
