Introducing the Ultimate Explorer – a fully inclusive, Alps to Ocean experience with 7 nights on the trail, designed for comfort, discovery, and unforgettable scenery.

The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Ultimate Explorer is the definitive way to experience New Zealand’s iconic Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. An immersive seven-night journey combining spectacular riding, unforgettable scenery and exceptional comfort from Aoraki / Mt Cook to the Pacific Ocean. Designed for travellers wanting more than just a cycling trip, this fully inclusive adventure blends iconic landscapes, unique local experiences and carefully selected accommodation into one extraordinary South Island escape.

Beginning beneath the towering peaks of Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park, the journey starts with breathtaking alpine scenery and the vivid turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki stretching towards the horizon. Your first evening is spent surrounded by New Zealand’s highest mountains and spectacular glacier landscapes.

Beyond the cycling itself, this itinerary includes a collection of exclusive experiences that elevate the journey into something truly special. Enjoy a guided walk to view the Tasman Glacier, take a scenic helicopter transfer across the Tasman River for a remarkable perspective of the Mackenzie high country, and spend a memorable night at the remote and beautifully located Braemar Station, where wide open landscapes and dark southern skies create a true sense of escape.

As the trail winds south through the Mackenzie Basin and Waitaki Valley, every day reveals a new and contrasting landscape. Ride beside the shimmering waters of Lake Ohau and Lake Benmore, follow peaceful canals and riverside trails, and cycle through rolling farmland and limestone country rich in geological history and pioneering heritage.

A highlight of the journey is the excursion to the spectacular Clay Cliffs, where towering pinnacles and dramatic rock formations create one of the South Island’s most unique natural landscapes. Along the way, enjoy welcoming country towns, local wines, regional produce and the warm hospitality that makes the Alps 2 Ocean experience so memorable.

With seven nights on the trail, the Ultimate Explorer allows time to truly settle into the rhythm of the ride, with manageable daily distances and opportunities to fully appreciate the scenery, stories and hidden gems of the region. All meals are included throughout the journey (except dinner on your final evening in Oamaru), allowing you to simply relax and enjoy the experience from start to finish.

The adventure concludes in the historic harbour town of Oamaru, where beautifully preserved Victorian architecture, a vibrant food scene and a celebratory drink at Scotts Brewery provide the perfect finale to an unforgettable mountains-to-sea journey.

This carefully paced itinerary allows ample time to soak in the diverse landscapes of the Mackenzie Basin and Waitaki District, from the towering peaks of Aoraki/Mt Cook to the coastal charm of Oamaru. With professional support and a carefully curated blend of cycling, comfort and unique experiences, the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Ultimate Explorer is the ultimate way to discover one of New Zealand’s most spectacular and rewarding Great Rides.

Grading

Introductory to Moderate
4

The Alps to Ocean is graded introductory to moderate. You will need a reasonable level of fitness with an average daily distance of 50km and the longest day up to 75km. We suggest 90 minutes of cycling three to five times a week for the three months leading up to your trip. Some of the sections are on seal or hard packed gravel and are relatively easy to ride. Other sections are on looser gravel which can be rough and uneven in places. The moderate sections over the Tarnbrae Saddle and from Sailors Cutting to the Benmore Dam include narrower tracks with some switchbacks and exposure in places. There are also plenty of hills so cycling up hills and on gravel and rougher terrain before your tour will enable you to really enjoy the fantastic riding and diverse scenery.
