Best of 4 Gorges Cycle – Otago Rail Trail, Lake Dunstan, Kawarau & Roxburgh by E-Bike is the ultimate cycling escape, bringing together four of the region's most iconic rides into one unforgettable adventure.

Combining the historic Otago Central Rail Trail, the spectacular Lake Dunstan Trail, the stunning NEW Kawarau Gorge Trail and the remote Roxburgh Gorge Trail, this fully supported journey showcases the incredible diversity of Central Otago's landscapes, history and cycling experiences.

Based in the charming heritage town of Clyde, you'll spend your days exploring some of New Zealand's most celebrated trails before returning each evening to relax, unwind and enjoy the town's welcoming atmosphere, boutique cafés and local hospitality.

The cycle begins with a highlight section of the Otago Central Rail Trail, following the route of the historic railway through classic Central Otago scenery. Ride across impressive viaducts, through hand-carved tunnels and past beautifully preserved railway stations while soaking up the region's rich gold rush and pioneering history.

From there it is onto the slightly more challenging Lake Dunstan Trail, where dramatic boardwalks and suspension bridges cling to towering schist cliffs above the turquoise waters of the lake. Continue through Central Otago wine country and discover why this trail has quickly become one of New Zealand's must-ride cycling experiences.

Next up is the spectacular Kawarau Gorge Trail, the newest addition to Central Otago's growing network of world-class cycle trails. Following the historic Kawarau River through rugged gorge country between Cromwell and Bannockburn, this trail blends dramatic river scenery, engineering marvels, suspension bridges and fascinating stories of the region's gold mining past. This trail is for the avid and experienced cyclist, rather than the novice rider.

Finally it's the rugged beauty of the Roxburgh Gorge Trail, where the mighty Clutha Mata-Au River winds through remote backcountry landscapes accessible only by bike and boat. Historic gold mining relics, dramatic rock formations and an unforgettable jet boat transfer make this one of the most unique cycling experiences in the country.

Travelling by e-bike allows you to fully appreciate the scenery while comfortably covering each day's distance. With all transport, logistics and support taken care of, you're free to simply enjoy the ride, stop for a Central Otago wine, linger over lunch at a vineyard café or soak up the incredible views that make this region so special.

Perfect for couples, groups of friends and active travellers looking for a comfortable cycling holiday, the Best of 4 Gorges Cycle – Otago Rail Trail, Lake Dunstan, Kawarau & Roxburgh by E-Bike delivers four remarkable rides, unforgettable scenery and authentic Central Otago hospitality, all from the convenience of one beautifully located base in Clyde.

After a morning briefing and bike fitting at our Clyde depot, we'll shuttle you to Oturehua where you will begin your ride along the Otago Rail Trail, cycling through one of the most scenic sections of the trail through tunnels and over viaducts in the secluded rocky setting of the Poolburn Gorge. The trail passes through the townships of Lauder, Omakau and Chatto Creek. Here we will collect you to take you back through to Clyde and your accommodation for the night.

This morning we transfer you from Clyde to the Cromwell Heritage Precinct, where you will set off for your day on the Lake Dunstan Trail. Cycle through the Bannockburn perhaps enjoying a stop at Carrick Winery on the way through. Enjoy delicious food and wine whilst overlooking the stunning Bannockburn Inlet from their restaurant. Choose from their seasonal menu which showcases the best local produce and organic ingredients fresh from their garden or enjoy a coffee and pizza alfresco. Continue cycling through the breathtaking Cromwell Gorge along the Clutha/Mata-au River to Clyde. Key features of the trail are the man-made landscapes, superb views from the trail summit, abundant vineyards and cellar doors in Bannockburn. Overnight back in the comfort of your Clyde accommodation.

We shuttle you through to the Gibbston Valley this morning for your Kawarau Gorge ride. Starting in the heart of Gibbston Valley, this spectacular ride follows the Kawarau Gorge Trail through one of Central Otago’s most dramatic landscapes. Pedal alongside the turquoise waters of the Kawarau River, passing renowned vineyards, historic gold mining sites and rugged schist cliffs as the trail winds through the gorge. Featuring impressive suspension bridges, elevated boardwalks and breathtaking bluff-top sections, this 35km journey offers a rewarding mix of adventure and scenery. As part of the newest link connecting the Queenstown and Central Otago trail networks, the route delivers an unforgettable cycling experience before finishing at Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell, surrounded by vineyards, mountain views and the relaxed atmosphere of Central Otago wine country. We collect you from Highlands this afternoon and take you back through to Clyde for your overnight.

Start your day today with a cycle from Clyde to Alexandra, either 8 km down the Rail Trail or 12 km on the slightly more technical but scenic river track. From Alexandra, you start the Roxburgh Gorge with a 10 km cycle to Doctors Point. You will board the jet boat and be transferred to Shingle Creek. Relax on board the boat while you take in the stunning scenery and history of the area as you make your way through the gorge—a highlight for many. From Shingle Creek , it is a further 11 km to the Roxburgh Hydro Dam. Cross the dam and ride 10km down the Clutha Gold trail to Roxburgh township where you will be picked up and shuttled back to Clyde. Trip arrangements end on return to our Clyde depot.
